Biosensors to Debut Investigational Cardiac Stent
Live by Satellite at TCT Conference
Biosensors International today announced details of its
participation in this year's TCT Annual Conference, being
held at the Washington Convention Center Monday, September
15 through Friday, September 19 in Washington, DC. This
is one of the premier events in the rapidly evolving world
of cardiology, and annually attracts the world's foremost
cardiovascular practitioners, researchers and medical device
manufacturers for presentations on a wide range of current
topics in the field.
Highlighting this year's TCT Conference
will be a live case transmission of the first-ever implantation
in a human subject of Biosensors' investigational MATRIXT drug-eluting
stent ("DES"), which is designed to restore blood flow
in a patient's constricted artery. The procedure will be
transmitted live by satellite from Siegberg Heart Center
in Germany.
The MATRIXT stent is designed to combat the common post-surgical
side-effect of stent implantation called restenosis, in
which the body's natural reaction to implantation of a
foreign object can result in excessive tissue build-up
around it, reversing the therapeutic effect of the stent.
MATRIXT releases (or "elutes") the candidate anti-proliferative
drug Biolimus A-9, developed by Biosensors, into the tissue
surrounding the stent to prevent restenosis, thus safeguarding
the stent's restoration of normal blood flow. Biolimus
is an analog of drugs previoiusly approved for this application,
but has exhibited bioavailability superior to other drugs
in its class in preliminary studies.
Throughout the week, Biosensors executives will be meeting
with conference attendees at Booth 1720, Exhibit Hall Lower
Level, near the poster presentations area.
In addition, John Shulze, the Company's
Chief Technology Officer and a TCT faculty member, will
present a lecture on Friday, "Bioerosion in Ultrathin PLA Drug Composite
Is Safe and Effective" as part of the Conference's Drug-Eluting
Stent Summit. Special coating composites for stents are
essential to controlling the rate of release of the drugs
they elute, such as Biolimus A-9, and John Shulze heads
the Biosensors initiative that leverages the Company's
expertise in this field.
"Last year's TCT conference marked a milestone in our
development program for the drug-eluting stent, trade-named
Challenge, which we subsequently licensed to Guidant Corporation,
and which is now the centerpiece of Guidant's DES initiative," commented
Yoh-Chie Lu, President and CEO of Biosensors International. "We
are pleased and proud to share our ideas and accomplishments
with the leading cardiologists and researchers who attend
TCT."
Mr. Lu continued, "This year's TCT is even more noteworthy
for us, with the first implantation in a human subject
of our new, investigational MATRIXT DES, in a procedure
that will be shown to hundreds of attendees of this large-scale,
prominent cardiovascular conference. We are looking forward
to renewing contact with many of the participants in last
year's conference and to making some new friends as well."
